A
good starting point is to have your DNA
done. You don't need to do any research,
but the service is not free. Getting
started is a simple process.
Go
to
FamilyTreeDNA.com.
I have done mine with them. You have the
option to remain totally private (a bit
pointless) or you can share with the
rest (without giving away who you are).
Doing
this, is not going to reveal your
ancestors, but it will tell you your
"place" in the family (or not). If
you're a Venter, you would want to
participate in the Venter Project.
Robert
Venter
in the USA (he is not related to the
South African Venters) is the project
leader and has been doing great work on
behalf of all Venters.
The
best advice and guidance that I have
seen on the Internet, was done by
Daniel
Jacobs. It is really a good document and
will guide you on how to go about doing
research. This document is available in
Afrikaans only, but I'm sure that he
will accommodate English speaking
enquiries. You can find the document
here (389 pages).
Take note. It is a 14,8Mb file!

As
I have advised many times on this site:
Don't just accept information as fact.
Always ask for the original source
information, and do not accept citations
from what somebody wrote or said. Get a
copy of the original document... |
